Ever since our son was young, he has said that he wanted to be an astronaut. He constantly wanted his room decorated in spaceships plus we even had the solar system painted on his ceiling and we added those glow in the dark stars too. After he started attending school he kept this dream alive by applying to space summer camps in the area in addition to learning anything and everything about space travel. Now that he is attending college he is studying to become an Aerospace Engineer. Although he would still rather go into space, he realizes that designing devices that are used on the space station is a better career opportunity. He also has a better opportunity of getting a job in this field. He told us he was surprised by how complex the Heating, Ventilation, plus A/C system needed to be on these spacecrafts. When he thought about it, this system was responsible for not only maintaining temperature, but ensuring that the astronauts had fresh air to breath. It’s not as if they can open a window or step outside in space! The Heating, Ventilation, and A/C system on a spacecraft must recirculate the air, introduce the needed oxygen, remove unwanted gases such as carbon dioxide, and control humidity levels. This is a truly important area of the design on a whole. The two of us are severely proud of how dedicated our son is to this field of study. He stuck to it but also realized that he needed a job that would pay well and have more chances than that of an actual astronaut. As an added benefit, he has a better appreciation for how much Heating, Ventilation, and A/C systems affect our lives.
