When my spouse Mark and I were ready to retire, the two of us purchased a fourth home down south. Both of us now divide our time between the home up north plus the single in the south, hoping to avoid all the cold weather. When the two of us purchased the fourth home, I had not realized how much work and worry this would create. It’s difficult enough to keep up with the demands of a home when we’re residing in it all year round. When the lake house is empty for six weeks, all sorts of things can go wrong. We’ve needed to forward our mail, hire a turf service, and buy a fourth set of clothes, linens, dishes plus toiletries. Mark and I have also enrolled in a maintenance plan with local Heating, Ventilation and A/C corporations in each location. When the two of us arrive at either home, we immediately call up the Heating, Ventilation and A/C corporation, and schedule an appointment. In our home up north, the Heating, Ventilation and A/C corporation inspects and adjusts the heating system, to make sure it’s operating safely and at peak capacity. Down south, the two of us hire an Heating, Ventilation and A/C serviceman to clean, troubleshoot and tune the A/C, removing any buildup from within the inner workings and promoting more reliable operation. This maintenance keeps both the heating system up north, plus A/C down south working at their best. Both of us avoid abrupt malfunctions, energy waste, and hopefully extend the lifespan of equipment. To make life easier, we’ve also installed smart temperature controls in both houses. This allows Mark and I to check in, make adjustments, and keep track of maintenance needs through an app on our smart phones.
