Last night I decided to go to a restaurant in our hometown. Every Monday, they have a large buffet with all kinds of pizza, homemade salad dressings, pastas, soups, and cheesy breadsticks. It’s our absolute favorite location to go to eat. But one problem that I have with the location is that occasionally it’s impossible to hear the person you’re trying to have a meal with. It’s not that the restaurant is crowded or anything. The issue is with the loud HVAC system, but whenever the heating comes on in the Winter or when the a/c kicks on in the summer, it’s still the same problem. The heated or cooled air comes rushing into the large dining space through the ventilation ducts in the ceiling, and the vented air is so loud that you wouldn’t even believe it! It’s loud enough that you can barely even hear yourself think! Much less carry on a conversation with a quiet dinner companion. Since I’m a respected customer there, I think most of the employees know me. Last night I talked to the assistant director, Kip. I asked him (well, I more or less had to yell the question at him, since the A/C was on!) what the issue was with the terribly loud HVAC unit. He said that their heating and a/c system has been on the blink for the last couple of years. And now, they are finally trying to decide if it’s worth the cost to replace it! At least that’s what I believe he said! I could barely hear him over the roar of the a/c system!
