Before consulting with my local Heating, Ventilation & A/C contractor, I had never known of a repair called duct balancing. Since the duct plan is concealed inside our walls, ceilings and crawl spaces, we paid it no attention. In the twelve years our family has lived in this home, I never once considered having the ductwork professionally taken care of. I’ve made sure to replace the heating/cooling air filters, plus I’ve been quite fine about scheduling repair for the oil furnace and cooling system. Last Winter, however, I could tell that multiple rooms in the home were far colder than others. No matter how I adjusted the control unit, I simply couldn’t achieve an even and comfortable temperature throughout our house. When I investigated, I discovered that particular supply vents were putting out excessive amounts of air, while others were barely receiving any air at all. Plus, the air smelled stale and there was a good bit of airborne dust floating around. The A/C was definitely running for longer cycles, rather noisily, plus our monthly utility bills went up considerably. When I explained the deal to the Heating, Ventilation & A/C contractor, he advised duct balancing. This was a more than an hour process that involved a whole group of testing plus measurements taken with some sophisticated equipment. The Heating, Ventilation & A/C contractor verified the speed and amount of airflow coming from the duct plan plus all of the vents. He discovered multiple leaks and defects in the duct system, plus a pile of contaminants. He then followed up with the duct cleaning plus sealing, which restored the proper performance of the system.
