For the majority of my life, I’ve had the reputation of being a terrible cook. It’s a shame really, because I love to bake! I can make all kinds of wonderful desserts from cookies to cakes, but a real entree or appetizer? Definitely not my forte. Thankfully I have my husband, who blows everyone away with his wonderful three-course meals. He’s a professional cook though, so of course he can pull that off. After months of prodding, my husband convinced me to come to his kitchen one night, where he was hosting a cooking class for a local school. I arrived with the rest of the students to make sure I didn’t stand out as the “teacher’s pet”. When we arrived, I expected the kitchen to be hot like a furnace. Instead, it was actually very cool and comfortable, with a light breeze moving through the cooking stations. I asked my husband about it, and he said the restaurant owner decided to add two room conditioners to the kitchen. He pointed at the rectangular boxes mounted to either side of the wall, smiling as he felt his hair dance on his head from the wind. A few minutes later, we started class, and the meal to make was chicken parmesan – my favorite! He must’ve done that on purpose. My cooking partner and I paid close attention as my husband taught the class to follow the recipe, and how to tell when the meat was ready. It was hard trying to balance my attention between the boiling pasta, the baking chicken and the careful cooking of the sauce, but the air conditioning in the kitchen really helped me keep my cool. Ultimately, I succeeded in making the meal, and I was so excited I ran up to the front and kissed my husband! It took a minute for me to realize what I did, so I just told the other students I was a little too excited about getting the meal cooked right.
